I just ordered an Ultra thinking I could make enormous sounding unique music with wall of sound 32 note polyphony in Serum and Diva without a mush of aliasing. The tester actually reported bad results with Diva too (See btw below), which is extremely disappointing as Serum and Diva are the bedrock of all my productions.
Of course, using Serum will still be worth it. Whilst Hive 2 and I suspect other best in class VSTis (Need to check Sylenth1 on M1), will be able to do more than Serum if they simply multicore or, like Hive, are ultra efficient. So, Apple M1 users will not get the promise of M1's CPU revolution we're seeing for video and other plugins, and will be forced to compromise on polyphony, complexity and/or quality.
Regardless of the 96khz sample rate, even at lower sample rates, x4 oversampling is likely to create a major bottleneck for heavy Serum users on M1. Regardless, Apple are phasing out all Intel chips and MacBook Pros with Intel throttle like hell under load, so I can barely run Serum at 44.1khz with x4 oversampling without compromises. So there won't be an M2 Ultra for 2 years, maybe only a 10 core M2 Pro, with 8 core M2's in the Mac Mini in Sept 2023 if we're lucky (Although rumours are it's coming sooner). M2 will have higher clock speeds, but they will release it in stages like M1. I think the problem for heavy Serum users on Mac is that M1 will be the status quo for a number of years.
